The video also revealed Mazhar as saying that Shahid Afridi, Abdul Razzaq, Saeed Ajmal and Younis Khan are not involved in spot-fixing.

Pakistan squad named for New Zealand tour

Pakistan squad named for New Zealand tourLAHORE: Pakistan Cricket Board has announced the national squad for the forthcoming tour of New Zealand here on Tuesday.

Misbah-ul-Haq and Shahid Afridi have been retained as captains for Test and Twenty20 teams, respectively.

Wicketkeeper-batsman Kamran Akmal, veteran batsman Mohammad Yousuf and opening batsman Imran Farhat have been left out of the squad.

Kamran, who was ruled out of Pakistan's recent series against South Africa in the United Arab Emirates after surgery for appendicitis, has been at the centre of match-fixing allegations.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) reportedly issued notice to him regarding Pakistan's controversial defeat against Australia in the Sydney Test in January.

But there were reports in Pakistani media suggesting Akmal, 28, had contacted the ICC regarding his selection and was told that he was cleared for selection.

Yousuf, 36, had to return home after a recurrence of a groin injury earlier this month and although he too was featuring in the domestic matches, selectors left him out.

Also out of the team was former captain Shoaib Malik while Sohail Tanveer has made comeback in the national team..

Malik, 28, was also left out of the team against the South African series after performing poorly on the tour of England.

The PCB has said that Wahab Riaz’s includion in the team depends on his fitness.

Twenty20 squad: Shahid Afridi (captain), Mohammad Hafeez, Ahmed Shahzad, Younis Khan, Umar Akmal, Fawad Alam, Adnan Akmal, Saeed Ajmal, Abdul Rehman, Abdul Razzaq, Umar Gul, Shoaib Akhtar, Tanveer Ahmed, Sohail Tanveer, Wahab Riaz.

Test squad: Misbah-ul-Haq (captain), Mohammad Hafeez, Taufiq Umer, Younis Khan, Azhar Ali, Asad Shafiq, Umar Akmal, Adnan Akmal, Saeed Ajmal, Abdul Rehman, Umar Gul, Tanveer Ahmed, Sohail Tanveer, Wahab Riaz.

Pakistan will play three Twenty20 Internationals, two Tests and six One-day Internationals on the 45-day tour.

The squad for ODI series will be announced later.

Pak team for New Zealand tour likely today

Pak team for New Zealand tour likely todayLAHORE: Pakistan cricket team is expected to be announced today for the tour of New Zealand as former captain Mohammad Yousuf and allrounder Sohail Tanveer are likely to be back in the squad.

The series, which will be played in New Zealand from December 26 to February 5, includes two Tests, six One-day Internationals and three Twenty20 internationals.

Yousuf and Sohail will be included in the team after clearing fitness test while Tanveer Ahmed, Asad Shafiq and Wahab Riaz, who displayed fine performance during the recent series against South Africa, will also be the part of the squad.

Salman Butt, Mohammad Aamer and Mohammad Asif will not be selected due to spot fixing charges while leg-spinner Danish Kaneria and wicketkeeper Kamran Akmal will likely to be remain ignored.

Misbah-ul-Haq will be captain of the Test team while Shahid Afridi will be remained captain of the ODI and T20 squad.

Drop Johnson from Aussie team: Chappell advises selectors

Drop Johnson from Aussie team: Chappell advises selectors BRISBANE: Australian paceman Mitchell Johnson has lost his confidence and must be dropped for this week's second Ashes Test in Adelaide, former captain Ian Chappell said on Tuesday.

Johnson, 29, went wicketless for 170 runs for the first time in his 39 Tests, made a duck and dropped a catch in Monday's drawn Gabba opener prompting a call for his axing.

The 2009 ICC Cricketer of the Year struggled throughout last year's Ashes series loss in England and the tourists had devised a plan to cut down on his effectiveness on home pitches, Chappell said.

Chappell said the national selectors had no option but to drop Johnson, because he had shown no ability to counter the patient English batsmen and his bowling had deteriorated as the first Test progressed.

Doubts expressed over Pak-Afghan match in Asiad

Doubts expressed over Pak-Afghan match in Asiad ISLAMABAD: Match fixing news in Pakistan cricket are spreading once again as Eleven Star Club here today blamed that the match played between Pakistan and Afghanistan in the Asian Games was doubtful.

Pakistan was handed an upset defeat by minnows Afghanistan in the semi-finals of the men’s cricket at the Asiad.

After this match, Pakistan wicketkeeper Naeem Anjum was dropped for the bronze medal match against Sri Lanka.

The reason for dropping him was reported his abusing against team skipper Khalid Latif and manager Chaudhry Mohammad Anwar.

Javed Ali Khan, chief of the Eleven Star, a local club of Islambabad, blamed in a letter to the Pakistan Cricket Board that the said match was doubtful because captain Khalid Lateef deliberately did not bat to the required run rated while Azeem Ghumman missed many balls.

He said that Naeem Anjum did not drop catches as it was said by the team management.

Javed demanded from the Board to investigate this whole incident.

Tendulkar's Chennai Test ton best ever, says Flintoff

Tendulkar's Chennai Test ton best ever, says Flintoff

Andrew Flintoff with school children in Mumbai
Andrew Flintoff rated Sachin Tendulkar's second innings Test century at Chennai against England as the batting maestro's career-best on Monday and termed his words of gratitude to the visitors for returning to India to play the series after the 26/11 terror strike in Mumbai as a extremely touching gesture.

"The one that he scored in Chennai after the 26/11 attack in Mumbai," the 33-year-old former England all-rounder said when asked about the best century scored by the champion batsman in Test cricket.

"We flew back and it was decided that we will play in Chennai. England were in a great position. And we thought we are going to win the Test match. But Sachin had other ideas. He scored a hundred. I am never good at losing. However, at that instance it was fitting that Sachin, who was from Mumbai, hit the winning runs," he said.

"The best thing is after the game he thanked everyone of the English players for coming back to India. That was quite a poignant moment for me and rest of the boys," he said after interacting with aspiring cricketers in a promotional event.

The England team returned home midway through the seven-match ODI series following the three-day terrorist siege of Mumbai before retuning to India to resume the tour and play in the Test series.

Saluting Tendulkar's longevity in the game, Flintoff wished the batsman many more years of international cricket ahead.

"He's an amazing man and a successful player. To play for so long as he has and to score so many runs as he has is amazing. He is somebody I have come to respect. I remember I had come to play for Lancashire Under-13. And he was making his Test debut. He was only four years older than me. But he has been playing since then.

"I wanted to get him out. I wanted to impress him, get his respect. Good luck to him. Hope he doesn't stop at 50 (centuries) and goes on and on and on. He's been a good ambassador for the game," he added.

On Tendulkar's comparison with legendary cricketer Don Bradman, he said, "Never played against Bradman. I don't know. It is wrong in sport to compare heroes. In modern day cricket, Sachin is the best."

Flintoff said while the retirement of some of greats of the current crop of Indian cricketers would create a hole in the team, the country need not be bothered about it yet.

"It is a big question. I think (especially) when they are still playing and Sachin (Tendulkar) is in the peak of his life, isn't he? He keeps scoring runs. He could carry on for a long time.

"But you could possibly like Australia had (Matthew) Hayden, (Justin) Langer, ( Adam) Gilchrist, (Glenn) McGrath, (Shane) Warne all finished at the same time. It does leave a hole in the side and needs rebuilding process.

"However, India are number one and playing fantastically well. I reckon they can carry on for as long as possible," he added.

When it came to the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011, Flintoff rated the hosts as favourites for the event.

"I think the sub-continent sides are the favourites - India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka because of the conditions. However, England have also got a chance. Can't really count out Australia. But again I think India are going to be the favourites on home soil.

"But they are under pressure as Indians expect India to do well all the time and that could be a daunting task," he said.

Flintoff said though India were favourites, because of their number one tag in Test matches, facing the hosts in home condition would be a tough challenge in their forthcoming series against South Africa.

Cricket unites for people living with HIV and AIDS

Cricket unites for people living with HIV and AIDS
International cricket will show its support for people living with HIV and AIDS this week with leading players wearing red ribbons on their playing shirts in international matches to help celebrate World Aids Day as part of the Think Wise partnership.

Players and match officials will wear red ribbons in the ODI matches being played on 1 December (Wednesday) between Bangladesh-Zimbabwe, India-New Zealand and Sri Lanka-West Indies, as well as on the opening day of the Ashes Test match between Australia and England on 3 December (Friday). Further activities are also being held in South Africa.

In addition, Sri Lanka spinner Muttiah Muralidaran will travel to Papua New Guinea this week to help take part in a variety of education and fundraising activities promoting World Aids Day.

Sri Lanka captain and Think Wise champion Kumar Sangakkara believes it is vital that cricketers show their support for the Think Wise initiative, a joint partnership between the ICC, UNAIDS, UNICEF and the Global Media AIDS Initiative that has been running since 2003.

The initiative aims to raise awareness around HIV prevention and eliminate discrimination against people living HIV and AIDS.

"It is very important because many people living with HIV live in cricket-playing countries. It is something that you cannot escape, no matter where we play and the lack of awareness and low sense of risk are some of the factors that contribute to high risk taking, making particularly young people in the 15-24 year age group vulnerable to infection," said Sangakkara.

"This lack of awareness is compounded by the discrimination that those living with HIV and AIDS undergo. It is therefore important to create awareness to stop the spread of the virus while also curbing discrimination and as international cricketers we can help to achieve this objective.

"The red ribbon that we wear symbolises our support for the cause to help those living with HIV and AIDS to live a full and productive life in society without giving up hope. It is a disease that we should fight by understanding how it spreads and encouraging people to talk about things like sexuality in their homes," added the Sri Lanka captain.

A new UNAIDS report shows that the world is beginning to reverse the spread of HIV. New HIV infections have fallen by nearly 20% in the last 10 years, AIDS-related deaths are down by nearly 20% in the last five years, and the total number of people living with HIV is stabilising.

The report gives new evidence that investments in HIV prevention are producing significant results in many of the highest burden countries. Despite these gains, an estimated 2.6 million people became newly infected with HIV and 1.8 million people died from AIDS-related illnesses in 2009, and 33.3 million people were estimated to be living with HIV.

The focus for the Think Wise campaign for the upcoming ICC Cricket World Cup 2011 will be ‘Get the Facts, Protect Yourself'. The campaign will encourage young people to be informed, take appropriate action to prevent HIV infection and stand together against stigma and discrimination often facing people living with HIV and AIDS.

Players will also wear red ribbons in important matches at the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011, including the quarter-finals, semi-finals and final.

South Africa skipper Graeme Smith, also a Think Wise champion, is delighted that that cricket will continue to show its public support for people living with HIV, particularly at the sport's flagship event.

"You only have to look at the statistics to understand why I am passionate, as the captain of South Africa, to raise awareness about HIV.

"Two million people die of AIDS-related deaths each year and nearly three-quarters of them come from Sub-Saharan Africa. These are people who watch me play cricket on television, support me in the stadium and this makes it all seem very real to me," said Smith

"If I can use my position as international cricketer to deliver important social messages, such as encouraging young people to use protection and wear a condom, and reduce the number of new infections then it is something that I am happy to do.

"By wearing a red ribbon we are sending a message to the millions of fans across the world that you shouldn't discriminate against people living with HIV," he added.

Sangakkara replaces Tendulkar at number one

Sangakkara replaces Tendulkar at number one

Kumar Sangakkara has been consistent for his tea
Sri Lanka captain Kumar Sangakkara has regained the top spot from India's Sachin Tendulkar in the Reliance Mobile ICC Player Rankings for Test batsmen after the top order batsman scored an impressive 150 against the West Indies in his side's drawn match at R. Premadasa stadium in Colombo.

The 33-year-old's 24th Test century, which came off 216 balls and included 12 fours and one six, lifting the Sri Lankan back to the top of the rankings and forcing Tendulkar into second place.

Joining Sangakkara in the top ten are two rising batsmen in the form of South Africa's AB de Villiers, the current ICC ODI Player of the Year, and England's Jonathan Trott, with both players entering the top ten of the Test batsmen rankings for the first time.

De Villiers had a strong first innings with the bat against Pakistan in Abu Dhabi scoring a record-breaking 287 not out to move up eight places to fifth while Trott's 29 and 135 not out against Australia in the first Ashes Test in Brisbane has seen the 29-year-old right-handed batsman rise to eighth position.

In the Reliance Mobile ICC Player Rankings for Test bowlers, India's Zaheer Khan's has risen to number three in the world, his highest ranking to date after figures of 4-90 against New Zealand in the second Test match at Hyderabad.

Australia's hat-trick hero Peter Siddle and England's Steven Finn have both climbed the rankings at the conclusion of the first Ashes Test. Siddle has risen to 14th after claiming 6-144 in the first Test at the Gabba while ICC Young Player of the Year Finn has broken into the top 20 in 19th place time after his six-wicket-haul.

There is no change in the Reliance Mobile ICC Player Rankings for Test all-rounders with South Africa's Jacques Kallis still leading the field. However Australia's Shane Watson has displaced England's Graeme Swann for fifth place in the all-rounders rankings after the 29-year-old Queenslander scored 77 runs and claimed 1-96 during the first Ashes Test.

Shakib Al Hasan on Monday joined an elite group of cricketers from across the world as he was announced the Think Wise campaign spokesperson for Bangladesh by the International Cricket Council (ICC).

The campaign aims at raising awareness about HIV and AIDS in order to make a positive impact on the lives of young people across the world and helps to prevent new HIV infections.

The announcement came at a press briefing held Monday afternoon at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in the presence of ICC, Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), UNICEF and UNAIDS officials.

"I feel privileged to be a part of the Think Wise campaign. I have always had a desire to support and assist social causes because as a sportsperson I know how far-reaching an impact we can make in addressing key issues like HIV and AIDS, especially in developing countries like Bangladesh," said Shakib Al Hasan.

He also said that South Asia in particular is in danger of HIV and AIDS as the lack of awareness and general ignorance in the region is far greater than anywhere else.

"Because of the presence of HIV and AIDS in every continent, the game of cricket can be a very powerful force against social stigma, ignorance and discrimination - factors that contribute to increased vulnerability to HIV infection. The victims are usually very young. Today, I am joining the fight to save generations by inspiring them to think wise and to take the right decision," said Shakib, who is currently the leading all-rounder in the Reliance Mobile ICC ODI Rankings.

The Think Wise initiative builds on a long-term partnership between the ICC, the joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS), UNICEF and the Global Media AIDS Initiative (GMAI) that for more than seven years has reached out to the cricketing community to work together in responding to the global AIDS crisis.

The partnership seeks to educate cricket players, coaches, commentators, broadcasters, volunteers and spectators about the AIDS epidemic, particularly around prevention, and stigma issues as around 10 million people living with HIV are from Test-playing nations. This number accounts for more than a quarter of all the people across the world that are HIV-positive and a sizeable portion of these people live in South Asia.

The other Think Wise champions working to make a positive impact on the lives of young people across the world and helping to prevent new HIV infections through using the power of cricket are Nathan Bracken from Australia, Isa Guha from England, Kumar Sangakkara from Sri Lanka, Graeme Smith from South Africa, Virender Sehwag from India, as well as Stafanie Taylor and Ramnaresh Sarwan from the West Indies.

PCB committee submits report on Zulqarnain

PCB committee submits report on ZulqarnainKARACHI: Pakistani officials submitted a report Monday into former wicket-keeper Zulqarnain Haider's dramatic escape to London, abandoning his team ahead of a match with South Africa, the cricket board said.

The 24-year-old fled the team hotel in Dubai on the morning of the fifth and final one-day against South Africa on November 8, claiming he received death threats from unknown people to influence the results of matches.

After flying into London, Zulqarnain retired from international cricket and sought asylum in Britain.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) terminated his contract and formed a three-man committee, headed by team manager Intikhab Alam, to establish the facts surrounding Haider's disappearance.

The committee finalised and submitted its report to the PCB, the PCB said, declining to make any further comment Monday.

Team security manager Khawaja Najam and PCB official Subhan Ahmed were the other two members of the committee.

On Sunday, Haider posted a message on Facebook, threatening to name several players in the next five days who took money to fix matches.

His family in Pakistan's eastern city of Lahore have told local media that they received death threats.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) said its anti-corruption staff met Haider in London and offered support to the former wicket-keeper.

Haider faces severe punishment for violating ICC ethics by not telling the council he was asked to influence match results for money.

PCB chairman Ijaz Butt says the Board's decision on the Haider affair will be based on the committee's report.

Several former players criticised Haider for merely trying to get political asylum in Britain.

India win 1st ODI against Kiwis by 40 runs

India win 1st ODI against Kiwis by 40 runs GUWAHATI: India secured a convincing 40-run victory in the first one-day international against New Zealand on Sunday, as Virat Kohli scored 105.

India's total of 276 looked enough, and New Zealand were out of contention at 169 for 8 after 36 overs before a quick ninth-wicket partnership of 67 between Nathan McCullum and Kyle Mills offered them a glimmer of hope.

But McCullum's dismissal in the 45th over allowed India to finish as the easy winners in gloomy conditions at the Nehru Stadium in Guwahati.

Kohli's century was the highlight of the game, with the right-handed number three scoring 100 off 100 balls before falling to Andy McKay, New Zealand's most effective bowler, caught by Jamie How in the 43rd over.

McKay pinned India back with four wickets for 62 runs, as the hosts' stand-in captain Gautam Gambhir scored 38 and Murali Vijay and Yusuf Pathan both chipped in with 29.

India's regular captain M.S. Dhoni was rested along with other top stars such as Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag and Harbhajan Singh for the start of the five-match series.

New Zealand's regular captain Daniel Vettori was also missing due to back stiffness following the three-game Test series between the teams, which India won 1-0 with victory in Nagpur.

Ross Taylor took over Vettori's post, and top scored with 66 as his side struggled to keep up with the required run rate of 5.66 an over.

Wicketkeeper and explosive opening batsman Brendon McCullum was also absent from the touring side with back trouble, with Gareth Hopkins taking over duties behind the stumps.

New Zealand had won the toss and elected to bowl as they took into account the Guwahati ground's reputation as a tricky track to bat on early in the day.

Kohli carries India to 276 against New Zealand GUWAHATI: Virat Kohli scored 105 to carry India to a solid total of 276 all-out in the first innings of the first one-day international against New Zealand on Sunday.

The right-handed number-three scored 100 off 100 balls before falling to Andy McKay, New Zealand's most effective bowler, when caught by Jamie How in the 43rd over.

Kohli's firepower looked set to take India to a formidable score but McKay pinned them back with four wickets for 62 runs.

Gambhir chipped in 38 as he took up the role of Indian captain, with M.S. Dhoni rested along with other top stars such as Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag and Harbhajan Singh for the start of the five-match series.

New Zealand's regular captain Daniel Vettori was also missing due to back stiffness following the three-game Test series between the teams, which India won 1-0 with a victory in Nagpur.

Strauss, Cook centuries turn tide for England

Strauss, Cook centuries turn tide for England BRISBANE: England are on course to salvage the opening Ashes Test after a dominant batting display to overturn a massive innings deficit into a mounting lead on the fourth day at the Gabba on Sunday.

England surged back after Saturday's fruitless third day in the field to trail by 221 runs and hit the front on the back of a ground record stand between skipper Andrew Strauss and Alastair Cook.

At the close, the Ashes holders, cheered on by their chanting Barmy Army fans, were 309 for one with Alastair Cook unconquered on 132 and Jonathan Trott on 54 to hold an overall lead of 88 runs.

Strauss and Cook combined for the highest English partnership for any wicket at the Gabba of 188 runs, eclipsing the previous best of 160 between Graeme Hick and Graham Thorpe in 1994.

It was also the first century opening stand by an English pair in Australia since Graham Gooch and Mike Atherton put on 203 for the first wicket in Adelaide in 1991.

Strauss was the only wicket to fall on the day when he came down the pitch and was deceived by offspinner Marcus North to be stumped by Brad Haddin for 110.

The English skipper scored his 19th Test hundred and fourth against Australia off 224 balls with 15 fours, some of them exquisite drives to the boundary ropes.

Cook chimed in with his 14th Test century and second against Australia to ram home the advantage over the home attack and was closing in on Ian Botham's highest score of 138 at the Gabba for England.

England, from looking in peril of going one down in the series, had dramatically turned things around to have an outside chance of being the only team who could win on Monday's final day.

England's cause was abetted by three dropped catches in a frustrating day for Australian skipper Ricky Ponting.

Wicketless paceman Mitchell Johnson added to his unhappy Test by putting down Strauss just before lunch with a tough but catchable overhead chance at mid-off when the English skipper was on 69.

Cook was dropped on 103 in a tough tumbling chance by Peter Siddle at fine
leg off Ben Hilfenhaus and then it was Trott who was given a life on 34 when Michael Clarke couldn't hold on to a diving left-handed chance at point.

The last time England scored two centuries in an Ashes innings was in Adelaide in 2006 when Paul Collingwood hit 206 and Kevin Pietersen 158.

Australia's toothless bowlers toiled away without reward on a placid Gabba pitch and Ponting rotated between six bowlers in a vain search of wickets.

Australia have earned a reputation since the retirement of champion bowlers Glenn McGrath and Shane Warne in 2007 of being unable to finish off teams, the latest coming in the one-wicket loss to India at Mohali last month.

The home side's unproductive day in the field coming off a massive innings advantage yet again underlined how much the once-mighty Australians have come back to the field in world cricket after the end of their golden era.

Australia have lost their last three Tests, to Pakistan and India (twice), something that has not happened for almost 22 years and have slipped below
England to fifth in the world rankings.

Scoreboard at the close on the fourth day of the first Ashes Test between Australia and England at the Gabba on Sunday:

Australia 1st innings: 481 (M. Hussey 195, B. Haddin 136; S. Finn 6-125)

Strauss, Cook in record stand to deny Aussies

Strauss, Cook in record stand to deny AussiesBRISBANE: Andrew Strauss and Alastair Cook shared in a ground record opening stand to strengthen England's chances of salvaging the opening Ashes Test against Australia at the Gabba on Sunday.

Eating into a 221-run innings deficit, the opening pair had taken England to 135 without loss at lunch on the fourth day to trail Australia by 86 runs.

Strauss hit some classic cover drives in his unbeaten 79 while Cook was on 51.

The pair put on their ninth century partnership together in 82 Test innings and England's highest at the Gabba.

They eclipsed the previous best of 114 at the Gabba shared between Herbert Sutcliffe and Douglas Jardine in the 1932-33 Bodyline series and David Sheppard and Geoff Pullar in 1962-63.

Australia's big moment came towards lunch when Mitchell Johnson put down a tough but catchable chance off Strauss when the English skipper was on 69.

Strauss had a rush of blood and lobbed debutant spinner Xavier Doherty to mid-off where Johnson leapt high and got both hands to the chance only to spill the ball.

Only Johnson and first-innings destroyer Peter Siddle looked threatening on the placid Gabba pitch and skipper Ricky Ponting rotated between six bowlers in search of a breakthrough.

Australia have earned a reputation since the retirement of champion bowlers Glenn McGrath and Shane Warne in 2007 of being unable to finish off teams, the latest coming in the one-wicket loss to India at Mohali last month.
